e-motive Scooters

The e-motive Scooters cost around a penny per mile to run, and the Road Fund Licence is free.

Customer Reviews for emotive Scooters

"BVM has left me with a dilemma. I’ve been slowly but surely renovating two 40 year old Honda CD 175 motorbikes. I was looking forward to getting them back on the road and enjoying all that goes with owning a classic bike when BVM sold me an electric bike, an E1 plus. It’s all my wife and I need to get in and out of Stroud. It’s tax free like the Hondas but it needs far less maintenance, no tuning carbs, no setting points, no oil changes, free fuel from our solar panels instead of expensive petrol - the list goes on. So do I carry on spending hours renovating the machines of my youth or sell them on to some other enthusiasts and make some space in the cellar for my grandchildren to play in? I no longer need them (the bikes, not the grandchildren). Thank you Tim for selling us an ideal machine. No thanks for leaving us wondering what to do with two classic bikes."

"When Tim at BVM kindly offered us the chance to use one of his E1 electric scooters, we at Westside Riders Mototrcycle Training jumped at the opportunity! I’d never ridden an electric powered two wheeler before and was interested to discover for myself how it would perform.

The E1 is the smallest powered version available but has two power delivery settings Low and High. Low is great for using in slow traffic, High when you want to get things on the move. The power is instant but any experienced scooterist(!) will cope very easily and the top speed achieved was about 45mph, more than adequate for commuting.

Battery life gave about 50 miles before a recharge was neccessary but the fact that the battery can be plugged in at any 240v socket meant that carrying the battery around under the seat was a viable option for charging on the move. A recharge at work is a good plan if you ask your boss nicely!

The build quality was good and I clocked up over 2000km in about 4 months, after a good jet wash the scooter came up as good as new and with only road dirt and brake dust to clean off the wheels it responded well to a good wash and brush up.

The one thing to be aware of is the lack of engine noise which makes the bike extremely quiet. Some pedestrians tend to use their ears rather than their eyes so a few judicious beeps of the horn were required especially on blind corners.

We had many students show interest in the E1 and the fact that is costs so little to run (no road tax either) means that it has so many advantages.

All in all the E1 is a fantastic bit of kit for the commuting rider and with it’s Vespa like styling it will attract a few admiring glances too!"

"Some would say that I am in the enviable position of living close to work and to my daughters’ school. But all these being within a few miles of each other causes problems when using the family car back and forth to work during the day. Not only potentially damaging the car through short journeys, but the parking is a nightmare especially when my work only offers 2000 spaces for 5000 people!
Since I purchased my e-motive e-1 scooter I no longer have to circle the car park hunting for a space for half an hour like I’m at a shopping centre. Even though this was one of my main reasons for buying, I was really pleasantly surprised at the speed, range and effortlessness of the scooter. This, coupled with the fact that even though I still use the car at weekends for longer journeys, I am only re-fuelling every 8 weeks now as opposed to every 4!
One thing I have also found whilst owning this scooter is the talking point on its quietness as people think they are seeing a standard spec scooter. The ‘vespa-esque’ look of the scooter still fits in with my bloke image, but when you explain the running costs, such as the free road fund license and the easiness of the three-pin plug connection to charge up, people are blown away.
I do get a general satisfaction that I am ‘doing my bit’, but also that I am saving a fortune and its making my life much easier. I can see this being a popular choice for the short journey in the future, with another two electric scooters stood beside me at the bike racks at work already!"

"It’s been something I’ve wanted to do for years - cut the cost of travel. But my children wouldn’t let me: a scooter just wasn’t cool. But this one definitely is! Even at the lower end of the E-motive range, it still copes wonderfully. Max speed is about 30mph - but that’s about all you do around Devon lanes anyway, so it doesn’t take that much longer. My one anxiety was whether it would cope with Devon hills. No problem at all. It has managed about 40 miles range, but by that time, hills do become a challenge. But round the villages here and into the nearby towns it’s great. And on top of that no tax - people marvel! - and easy to recharge. Insurance wasn’t easy to find. Some companies just didn’t want to know. So now I’m green and free! and amazingly considered part of the biking fraternity. Amazing the conversations you get."

"I did a lot of research before buying an electric scooter. I wanted a scooter that could keep up with the commuting traffic, I wanted it to have a good mileage and I wanted a competitive price. The E3 E-Motive seem to fit the bill, so I recently bought one and it has not let me down. The scooter can go up to 55 mph, as long as you are not going uphill and it can theoretically get over 60 miles between charges, though I have not tested this yet. The bike is eerily quiet, but has quite a surge of power when you accelerate. In fact the acceleration can be quite sudden and you do have to be quite sensitive when starting the bike or accelerating around bends. The bike controls are simple to understand and use. I have not found the insurance that much cheaper than my car insurance, but it’s great not to have to pay tax. The maintenance cost should prove a lot less than for a car and the running cost are a pleasure to contemplate."

"As a country vicar I use my E3 to scoot between villages here in South Gloucestershire on parish business. The lanes are quiet, journey times the same as with a car, but with a fraction of the fuel costs. I’ve also made a few trips into the centre of Bristol, making (legal) use of bus lanes and free parking. An overnight charge in the garage and the scooter is ready again the next morning.

I think the furthest I have travelled is 40 miles, which included a trip in and out of Bristol with some big hills."

Saving Money Silently

BVM Moto in London Road, Stroud, is offering an eco-friendly alternative for commuters – electric scooters. Stroud Life reporter BEN FALCONER spent two weeks with emotive’s mid-range e3.
"A WAG once wise-cracked that it takes a crank to start a revolution but, in the case of the e-motive, that’s not quite the case.
And the revolution started by the lithium ion battery and hub electric motor is silent – almost. All that accompanies me on the route to a greener lifesytle is the faint sound of a whirring motor and the noise of wind rushing past my crash helmet.
This is a good thing and could be a bad thing – while you are aware of everything around you, others may not be. I had a few close encounters with pedestrians who crossed the road without looking first. So I altered my riding style accordingly.
Emissions from the bike itself are nil.

Ben on the e-motive e3 electric scooter
A full four-hour charge can take you 60 miles with a top speed of 60mph, claims e-motive. Given the right conditions, they could be right. The first bonus you notice is its "plug and play" convenience. Turn the key, twist the throttle and you are away. That’s it. No choke, no fuel tap, and no gearbox to find neutral in.
There’s a handy switch to aid smooth take-off and save power and, around heavy traffic and in tight streets, it’s all you need. Flip it in to "high" and it’s got enough beans to hold its own on the open road.
The Five Valleys have one or two steep hills and the e-motive managed most of them pretty well. Progress, is perhaps, a little slower than say a 100cc scooter but not much.
Anyway, toddling up Butterrow one evening allowed me time to do a few costings. And, for me, money is the clincher. For a start, there is no charge for road tax. E-motive claims running costs of 1p a mile in charging the bike. That’s seven times cheaper than my motorbike which returns 75mpg.
It is trips to work which this machine is well suited to. I went to and from work on it three days out of four, which amounts to almost 30 miles over a few hills and it was fine without a charge. A 30-mile round trip to Gloucester used up more battery power, though, as I spent most of the time on full throttle with the lights on and I encountered several hills. I only just made it back. You just have to think about your journeys a tiny bit more.

Ben Falconer prepares to charge the scooter
I think it’s going to be attractive to second car owners – in theory, you could head to work 60 miles away, charge it while at work and ride home.
The model I rode costs £2,999 but if you opt for the top of the range e5, for £1,000 more, e-motive reckon you’ll get 66mph top speed and 80 miles between charges. The cheapest, the e1, comes in three power outputs, all less than the e3. All models come with a two-year warranty and battery life is up to three years. Batteries should last between 1,000 and 2,000 charges. Replacement battery cells cost £85.65 plus VAT and they are unlikely to fail all in one go.
